Hales Corners is located in southwestern Milwaukee County. It is bounded by Greenfield on the north, Greendale on the east, Franklin on the south, and New Berlin and Muskego in Waukesha County on the west. The village has a total area of 3.22 square miles (8.34 km²), of which, 3.21 square miles of it is land and 0.01 square mile (0.03 km²) is water. The population of the village was 7,692 at the 2010 census. The land in the area that would eventually encompass the Village was first claimed as French, then British, and eventually as the Northwest Territory of the United States in 1783. It was the land of the Potawatomi Indians until they were forced to move from their land in 1838. Hales Corner traces its history as a Village to 1837, when Seneca Hale laid claim to land here, and its name is credited to his brother William, who became its first Postmaster in 1854. The site of monthly fairs begun in the mid-1800's, when the plank road between Janesville and Milwaukee passed through the village. First a gathering of horse traders, the fairs became a stock market for farmers trading pigs, cattle, and sheep. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size is 2.91. The median age in the village is 43.9 years. The gender makeup of thevillage was 47.6% male and 52.4% female.

History

The land in the area that would eventually encompass the Village was first claimed as French, then British, and eventually as the Northwest Territory of the United States in 1783. It was the land of the Potawatomi Indians until they were forced to move from their land in 1838. During the 1830s and 1840s, more settlers arrived, starting with a number of New England families. Among them were three Hale families, whose lineage has been charted to England in the 1200s. Hales Corners was the site of monthly fairs begun in the mid-1800's, when the plank road between Janesville and Milwaukee passed through the village. First a gathering of horse traders, the fairs became a stock market for farmers trading pigs, cattle, and sheep. The village's name is credited to his brother William, who became its first Postmaster in 1854, and its name is also credited to Seneca Hale, who laid claim to land here in 1837, and his son William Hale who became the village's first Mayor in 1858. The Village is now home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which was founded in 1852. The University ofWisconsin- Milwaukee is located on the shores of the Wisconsin River, and was the first college in the U.S. to offer a degree in economics. It is also the home of the National Museum of American History, which dates back to the 17th century. The museum is housed in a building that was once used as a stage for the Great Depression.

It also has a long history in the Milwaukee area, dating back to at least the early 1800s, when it was known as Hales Township. The current mayor of Hales Corner is Michael Hales. He was elected to a second term in 2010.

There were 3,505 housing units at an average density of 1,091.9 per square mile (421.6/km²) The racial makeup of the village was 94.7% White, 1.0% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1,7% Asian, and 1.2% from two or more races. Education

The Whitnall School District serves Hales Corners. The district's schools include private and public schools. The town is home to a Lutheran and a Catholic school. It is also home to the Hales-Corners High School for Girls. The school district also has a post-secondary school, the Sacred Heart School of Theology. It also has an elementary school and a private school for children of all ages. The area is located near the town's main road, Hales Road, which runs through the center of the town. It was once known as "Hales Road" and was once called "Hale's Road" by locals. It has since been renamed "Whitnall Road" in honor of the district's founder, William Whitall, who was born in the area in 1881. The community is now known as Halescorners and has a population of 1,000. It's also known as the "Wentzville" area, which was once part of the "Whitall Township" and is now called "Wesley Township" It is located in the northern part of Hales County, in the north of the county, on the outskirts of the city of Whitall Road, and is known for its many lakes and streams. The village has a number of churches, including St. Mary's Lutheran and St. Paul's Lutheran. The HalesCorners School for Boys was founded in the early 20th century. It closed in the 1950s.
