Eleanor

Eleanor is a town in Putnam County, West Virginia, United States, along the Kanawha River. The town, named for Eleanor Roosevelt, was established as a New Deal project in the 1930s like other Franklin D. Roosevelt towns around the nation (e.g. Greenbelt, Greenhills, Greendale, Hanford, or Norris). Eleanor is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definitions from February 28, 2013 placed the population at 363,000. The U.S. Census Bureau says the town has a total area of 2.13 square miles (5.52 km²), of which 2.12 square miles of it is land and 0.01 sq miles (0.03 km²) is water. It is located at 38°3221N 81°5552W (38.539037, -81.931046). The town is located in the West Virginia Bootheel, an area known for its coal mining history. It was one of three resettlement communities in West Virginia in 1934, the others being Arthurdale and Tygart Valley. There are three schools in Eleanor: George Washington Elementary School, George Washington Middle School and the putnam County Career and Technical Center. It has a Humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

History

Eleanor was established in 1934, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor visited the county and developed it as a test site for families. It was one of three resettlement communities in West Virginia, the others being Arthurdale and Tygart Valley. When the town was developed, the houses were built to look very similar to one another and are now referred to as old Eleanor houses. There are three schools in Eleanor: George Washington Elementary School, George Washington Middle School and the Putnam County Career and Technical Center. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located in the eastern part of the state, near the border with Virginia and West Virginia.

Geography

Eleanor is located at 38°3221N 81°5552W (38.539037, -81.931046).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.13 square miles (5.52 km²) of which 2.12 square miles is land. The climate in this area is characterized by relatively high temperatures and evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Eleanor has a Humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The town is located on the Missouri River, which runs through the center of the town. It is the only town in the state to have been named after a Confederate general. It was named after Eleanor, a woman who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1859. It has been named for Eleanor, the daughter of a former president of the United States, who was born in the town in 1858. It also has been known as "Eleanor" or "Elo" by some residents. The name is derived from the name of Eleanor's daughter, who died in the Civil War, and was buried in a shallow grave in a nearby cemetery in 1864. It now has a population of 1,856. It lies on the Colorado River and has a climate of Humid Subtropical Climate (Cfa) with high temperatures, evenly distributed rain and dry weather throughout theyear.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,518 people, 624 households, and 445 families living in the town. There were 608 housing units at an average density of 722.0 per square mile (279.5/km²) The racial makeup of the town was 99.55% White, 0.07% African American, 0,07% Native American, and 0.15% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population. The median income for a household in the city was $35,284, and $43,274 for a family. About 5.6% of families and 6.8% of residents were below the poverty line, including 12.2% of those under age 18 and 3.9% ofThose age 65 or over. The town is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's National Defense Training Area, which is part of the Army National Guard. It is the only town in the state to have a military base, which was established in the early 1900s. It was the site of the World War I Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War One. It has a population of about 1,500, and is home to the National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, and 7th Ranger Regiment, which are all based in the area. It also has a National Guard Air Station, which opened in the late 1800s.
