During the American Civil War, the B&O railroad sustained more damage than Confederate forces succeeded in burning several of the railway bridges at the very beginning of the conflict. A new chapter in Mannington's history began in 1889 with the first oil drilling, following recommendations made by Dr. C. White White, a well-known geologist who later became later West Virginia State Geologist. The first oil and gas boom began in the late 19th century and ended in the early 20th century.

History

Mannington, Virginia, was founded in the late 19th century. It was named after Charles Manning, a civil engineer with the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. Mannington became one of the largest oil field fields in the state in the early 20th century, producing about 1,600 barrels per day. The town's population increased from approximately 700 people to over 4,000 by the end of the 20th Century. The museum is located in the former home of John Ice, who was born in the valley of the South Branch of the PotOMac River in what was then Virginia. He was the only member of his family to return to the area after being captured by Native Americans as a child. He is now the curator of the Virginia State Museum of Art and History, which opened its doors to the public in 1913. The Museum is also home to a collection of photographs of the area, many of which were taken by John Ice during his time in the area. The collection is on display at the Virginia National Gallery of Art, located in Richmond.

Literary link

Mannington is the model for the fictional town of Grantville in Eric Flint's best selling 1632 series of alternate history novels: 1632, 1633, Ring of Fire, The Grantville Gazette, and other book-length and shorter works. The premise of the series is that, in about April 2000, irresponsible aliens (accidentally) exchanged a sphere with a radius of about three miles (5 km) centered on Grantville with an equally sized chunk of Thuringia from 1631, plunging the town into the midst of the Thirty Years' War. Flint has stated, "There are rules that I require everyone to follow when they write in the series. One of them is that it if it wasnt in the town of Mannington in 2000, you cant have it in Grantville. The one cheat I had to do was that I needed a power plant. The power plant is about 15 miles away, in a town called Granttown, so I just sorta moved it over. Thats the only real cheat" The series has evolved into a large-scale experiment in collaborative fiction and has attracted considerable interest from other best selling writers, including David Weber and Mercedes Lackey. The fans and writers of the1632 series have held at least four conventions in Mannington. The fourth was held on August 46, 2006. The 1632 Series is available in hardback, paperback, and e-book formats.
