Lakewood is the second-largest city in Pierce County, Washington. It is home to the Clover Park School District, the Lakewood Water District, Fort Steilacoom Park and Western State Hospital. The city is located at 47°10N 122°32W (47.164, -122.526). The city has a total area of 18.95 square miles (49.08 km²), of which, 17.17 square mile (44.47 km²) is land and 1.78 squaremile (4.61 km²") is water. The western terminus of State Route 512 is in Lakewood, at its intersection with Interstate 5. A number of small creeks flow through the city, some of which drain into nearby Puget Sound. There are several lakes within the city limits; the largest in area are American Lake, Lake SteilACoom, Gravelly Lake, and Lake Louise. The Waughop Lake is incorporated into the aforementioned Fort Steillacoom park. The population of the city was 58,163 at the 2010 census. It will be 63,612 at the 2020 census, and will be the largest city in Washington state with a population of more than 60,000. The average household size in the city is 2.36, and the average family size was 2.98. The median age is 36.6 years, with 22.7% of residents under the age of 18; 10.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.4% were from 25 to 44.
History
Lakewood is the primary city name, but also Joint Base Lewis Mcchord, Lewis Mcchord, Mcchord AFB, Tacoma are acceptable city names or spellings, Jb Lewis Mcchord, Jblm, Mc Chord AFB on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Lakewood. Lakewood is the second-largest city in Pierce County, Washington. It is home to the Clover Park School District, the Lakewood Water District, Fort Steilacoom Park and Western State Hospital, a regional state psychiatric hospital. Lakewood was officially incorporated on February 28, 1996. Thornewood Castle was built in the vicinity of Tacoma in the area that is now Lakewood. The city's name was used by the U.S. Census in the 1970 and 1980 Census. It was also known as Tacoma/Lakewood Center and Lakes District. The current name was adopted in the 1990s. The City of Lakewood is located in the eastern part of Pierce County and is located just south of the city of Tacoma. It has a population of about 3,000. The town is located on the shores of Lake Washington. The area was once known as the "Lakes District" due to its proximity to Lakewood, Washington, which was then part of the state. The name was later changed to "Lakewood" and later to "Tacoma" in the 1960s and 1970s. It is located on the eastern edge of the Olympic Peninsula, which stretches from the west to the east. The U.S. state of Washington is in the eastern part of the Cascades, and the state of Oregon is in its eastern part. Government and politics
Lakewood is served by the West Pierce Fire Department (WPFD) The WPFD has 6 departments located in the two cities. The City of Lakewood contracted with the Pierce County Sheriff's Office for police services between 1996 and 2004. The Lakewood Police Department started independent police and patrol operations on November 1, 2004. On November 29, 2009, four LPD officers were shot and killed. The four were the first Lakewood police officers to be killed in the line of duty since the department's establishment in 2004. Two baristas and several customers in the shop were not injured. The shooting is believed to be the most deadly attack on law enforcement in the state of Washington, and the second deadliest attack in the U.S. since the March 21, 2009 shootings that left four Oakland, California police officers dead. The Dallas attack on July 7, 2016 had 5 officers killed and 2 wounded, since the Dallas attack in July of that year had 5 police killed and two wounded. The city is home to the University Place High School, which was founded in 1883. The University Place School of Medicine was established in 1887. It was the first public high school in the United States. It is located in Lakewood and serves University Place, as well as the neighboring town of West Pierce. The West Pierce High School was founded on August 1, 1883, and was the site of the Lakewood High School's first graduating class in 1881. The school was founded by the parents of two students who were killed in World War II.
Education
The Clover Park School District operates all public schools within Lakewood. Private schools include St Frances Cabrini School, St Mary's Christian School, and Lakewood Lutheran School. Portions of Lakewood are in the Steilacoom Historical School District and Tacoma Public Schools. Lakewood is also home to Pierce College Fort SteilACoom and Clover Park Technical College. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force base at Lakewood Air Force Base, which is located just outside the city limits. The U.N. Peacekeeping Force is based in Lakewood and has a presence in the city as well as in Tacoma, Washington. The University of Washington has a campus in the town, which was founded in the early 1900s. It is one of the oldest colleges in the United States and is located in the Tacoma-Elkhorn area of Washington. It was the first college in the state to open in the mid-20th century, and is now the second oldest college in Washington state. It also has a number of other colleges, including Tacoma State University and the University of Puget Sound, which opened in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The town has a population of about 3,000. It has been the site of several major construction projects, including the Tacoma Shipyard and Tacoma Shipyards. The Lakewood Airport is located near the center of the city. The airport was built in the 1970s and 1980s as part of the construction of the Tacoma Beltway.

Lakewood's economy is highly dependent upon on the military bases in the area. It also boasts one of the few true International Districts in the South Sound along South Tacoma Way and Pacific Highway.
