Renton is a city in King County, Washington, and an inner-ring suburb of Seattle. Its early economy was based on coal mining, clay production, and timber export. Today, Renton is best known as the final assembly point for the Boeing 737 family of commercial airplanes. It is also home to a growing number of well-known manufacturing, technology, and healthcare organizations, including Boeing, Kaiser Permanente, IKEA, Providence Health & Services, UW Medicine, and Wizards of the Coast. As of the 2020 census, the population of Renton was 106,785, up from 90,927 at the 2010 census. The city government has encouraged redevelopment of industrial areas around Downtown Renton and near Southcenter since the 1980s. The first IKEa in the Pacific Northwest opened in Renton in 1994. Port Quendall, a land parcel in north Renton, is home to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC), housing the Seattle Seahawks Headquarters and training facility that opened in August 2008; before then, the Seahawks trained in Kirkland. The Renton Public Library was built directly over the Cedar River and opened in 1966. It stretches 80 feet (24 m) across the river, next to Liberty Park, and was the main branch of the city's independent library system until its 2010 annexation into the King County Library system. The former Longacres horse-racing track was redeveloped in the 1990s to support offices for Boeing and the Federal Reserve Bank, which moved from its Seattle building.

History

Renton is the primary city name, but also Newcastle are acceptable city names or spellings, Hazelwood, Highlands, Kennydale on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Renton. European settlers arrived in the area of present-day Renton in the 1870s. Renton was named in honor of Captain William Renton, a local lumber and shipping merchant who invested heavily in the coal trade. The city government has encouraged redevelopment of industrial areas around Downtown Renton and near Southcenter since the 1980s. Providence Health System has centralized its administrative offices in Renton. Port Quendall is home to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC), housing the Seattle Seahawks Headquarters and training facility that opened in August 2008. The first IKEA in the Pacific Northwest opened in RENTON in 1994. The Renton Public Library was built directly over the Cedar River and opened in 1966. It stretches 80 feet (24 m) across the river, next to Liberty Park, and was the main branch of the city's independent library system until its 2010 annexation into the King County Library system. In the mid-1990s, Renton undertook a major redevelopment effort to revitalize its downtown core, which had declined in commercial prominence since the opening of the Southcenter Mall in Tukwila in 1968. The many car dealerships that had previously occupied the center of downtown Renton were encouraged through economic incentives to relocate to a newly created auto sales zone close to the I-405/SR-167 interchange. The former Longacres horse-racing track was redeveloped in the 1990s to support offices for Boeing and the Federal Reserve Bank, which moved from its Seattle building.

Geography

Renton is located at 47°2912N 122°1143W (47.486622, 122.195163), on the southeast shore of Lake Washington. Renton has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csb) with warm and dry summers mixed with cloudy, wet and cool winters. The city has a total area of 23.54 square miles (60.97 km²), of which 23.12 sq miles (59.88 km²) is land and 0.42sq miles (1.09 km²") is water. The area is bordered to the north by Newcastle, to the south by Kent, and to the west by Tukwila, Lake Washington and West Hill. As of 2012 these three communities are not part of the City of Renton, and not included in its demographics or statistics.Potential Annexation Areas (PAAs) include the communities of Fairwood, the East Renton Plateau on the eastern edge of RENTON, and the unincorporated community of West Hill to the northwest. These communities are large uninc incorporated urban areas that are encouraged by the King County Annexation Initiative to incorporate as cities or annex into neighboring cities. Many of the avenues in the city are named in honor of other cities in Washington. There is no incorporated city directly east of Rrenton, as such there is no city directly east of RENTON. RENTon is one of the cities in the Puget Sound Region with an independent street grid system.

Demographics

The 2019 median income for households in Renton is $70,661, while the mean household income is $89,808. 9% of families and 12% of individuals are below the federal poverty line. The racial makeup of the city was 54.6% White (49.4% Non-Hispanic White), 10.6%. African American, 0.7% Native American, 21.2% Asian, 0,8% Pacific Islander, 6.2%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.1% of the population. The city's median age was 35.2 years, and the city's gender makeup was 49.5% male and 50.5%. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.16. The population of Renton in the 2010 census was 90.927. It is the most populous city in the state, followed by Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue. The median age in the city is 35.0 years, with a median age of 35.5 years. The U.N. estimates that Renton's population will reach 100,000 by the end of the century.

Economy

The Boeing Renton Factory has operated since World War II, when it manufactured the B-29 Superfortress. The Renton plant produced the Jetfoil and Pegasus class hydrofoils in the 1970s. As of 2001, 40% of all commercial aircraft in the air were assembled in Renton. The city is home to over 10,000 employees and three of the aerospace giant's six major business divisions: Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Capital Corporation and the Shared Services Group. The top employers in the city are: Boeing Capital, Providence Health & Services, and Wizards of the Coast. The local newspaper in the 70s, the Record Chronicle, proclaimed the city the jet capital of the world. In the early 1980s the Paccar Railcar Division; the last remnants of the original Pacific Car and Foundry Co closed down. In 1993, a new Kenworth assembly plant opened on the former site of Pacific Car & Foundry. The Kenworth Truck plant is located in the south end of Renton's industrial area on the south side of Lake Washington. The Seattle Car Mfg Company also known as the Car Company moved to a large manufacturing plant in Rentin after demand for the company's railroad equipment exceeded the capacity of its Seattle plant. The Car Company was the only manufacturer of train cars on the west coast. In 1907, the Renton manufacturing switched its production towards the war effort, and by the war's end in 1945 had built 1,500 Sherman Tanks. By the end of the second half of the 20th century there was not enough repeat business for P Accar-built train cars.

Education

Renton Technical College, originally opened in 1942 as a war production school, offers associate degrees and certificates of completion in professional-technical fields. The Renton School District provides K12 public schooling. The Issaquah School District serves a small portion of unincorporated Renton neighborhoods. The Tahoma School District serving a small part of Renton along Maple Valley Highway. The Kent School District serve the majority of Fairwood, a census-designated place between Renton and Maple Valley. The school district also has four middle schools and fifteen elementary schools. The city is served by the Renton High School District, which includes the four high schools: Hazen High School, Lindbergh High school, Renton high School, and Albert Talley Senior High School. It is also served by three other school districts, all of which predominantly serve neighboring cities. Renton is located in the Snohomish County, Washington, U.S., and is home to the Washington D.C. Air Force Academy, which opened in 1969. The Washington State Department of Education operates the Washington State College of Education, which offers associate and bachelor's degrees in a variety of fields. It also offers a number of certificates and certificates in professional and technical fields, such as nursing, accounting, and business administration. It was founded in 1942 and is based in Renton, Washington. It has a campus in downtown Renton that opened in the 1970s. Renton is served by King County Metro and Sound Transit Express buses. The city government owns and operates Renton Municipal Airport (KRNT), officially Clayton Scott Field, a public airport at the foot of Lake Washington. It is used by the Boeing Renton Factory as well as for charter services and flight training. Renton is home to the Renton High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010 and 2011. The school's football team also won the national championship in 2011 and 2012. The football team won the Washington State championship in 2012 and 2013. The team's last loss came in the 2014 World Series. The game was the first to be played in Renton since the city was founded in 1894. The U.S. National Football League has a team based in the city, the Washington Redskins. The NFL's Seattle Seahawks are based in Seattle and the Sounders FC play in the NFC East division. The Sounders FC won the Super Bowl in 2014 and the World Series in 2014. The Super Bowl is scheduled to take place in Seattle in 2016. The World Series will be held in Seattle for the first time in 2026, and will be the second time in the history of the city. The first time the city has hosted a Super Bowl game in its history. The last time was in 1968. The stadium was the site of the opening of the Seattle World Series, in which the Sounders beat the Seattle Seahawks 4-2. It was also the first World Series game to be held at the Seattle Super Bowl stadium.
