Blytheville was founded by Methodist clergyman Henry T. Blythe in 1879. It was incorporated in 1889, and became the county seat for the northern half of Mississippi County in 1901. The population was 13,406 at the 2020 census, down from 15,620 in 2010. The city has a total area of 20.8 square miles (54 km²), of which 0.06 sq miles (0.16 km²) is water. The Missouri state line is 5 miles (8 km) north, and the Mississippi River, forming the Tennessee border, is 8 miles (13 km) east. On the western edge of the city lies one of the largest cotton gins in North America. In the 1980s, the city began to develop an industrial base, much of which centered on the steel industry. Until 1991, Bly theville Air Force Base was a major airfield that was part of the Strategic Air Command. James Sanders is the first African-American mayor to serve in that position. The mayor is a former member of the Arkansas House of Representatives and a former mayor of West Memphis. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city will have a population of 13,400 by the end of the next census in 2020. The area has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters, according to the Köppen Climate Classification system.

History

Blytheville was founded in 1879, and became the county seat in 1901. The city is home to one of the largest cotton plantations in the world. It is also home to the Blythville Air Force Base, which was built in the 1960s and 1970s. The town has been the site of many high-profile incidents, including the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. It has been home to a number of notable people, including President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush, as well as the mayor of the city, James Blythe, who was born in 1881. It was named after the B lythe family, which moved to the area in the 1800s after the Great Fire of 1871. The name "B lythe" means "blythe" in English, which means "to give" or "to help" in Spanish. The word lythe means "home" in Latin, and means "the place" in the U.S. where the city is located. Economy

Nucor Steel is the largest employer for both Blytheville and Mississippi County. In February 2015, ART laid off between 50 and 75 employees. Tenaris, a manufacturer and supplier of seamless and welded steel pipe products, operates 4 ERW (electric resistance welded) pipe manufacturing, threading and coating facilities. In January 2015, Tenaris laid off about 300 employees. The company laid off 100 more employees in January 2016. Nucor steel Arkansas announced plans for a new cold mill in 2019. It employs approximately 120 employees at Arkansas International Airport. It is the second largest employer in the county. It also employs about 50 people at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds. It has four locations in Arkansas, including two in Mississippi County, one in Bly theville and one in Arkansas City. It operates four ERW manufacturing facilities, including one at the state fairgrounds, and employs about 120 employees. It was founded in 1903 and is based at Arkansas State College. It began operations in the 1950s and has since grown to employ about 1,000 people. It currently operates four facilities in Arkansas and has a total workforce of about 2,000. It opened its first ERW facility in the 1970s and employs approximately 100 people. In the 1990s, it opened a second ERW plant in Arkansas. It now employs about 100 people at its Arkansas City location. It recently opened a third ERW factory in Arkansas Springs. It will open a fourth ERW location in the spring of 2015.

Education

Blytheville is home to Arkansas Northeastern College (formerly Mississippi County Community College until its merger with Cotton Boll Technical Institute) It offers a two-year program, and is the United State's first community college with a solar photovoltaic prototype facility. Other portions of the city limits are zoned to Armorel Public Schools and Gosnell Public Schools. A Catholic school, Immaculate Conception School, operated in Bly theville until its 2007 closure. In addition KIPP Delta operates the Kipp Delta BlyTheville Charter School. The city is also home to the Arkansas State Museum, which opened in the 1970s. It is located on the Arkansas Turnpike, which was built in the early 1900s. The museum is open to the public and offers a wide range of exhibits, including art, history, science, technology, and the arts. It also has a museum of American Civil War history, which dates back to the 18th century. It was also the site of the first U.S. Air Force base in the late 1800s, which is located in the town's downtown area. The town is also the home of the Arkansas National Guard, which has been stationed in the area since the mid-19th Century.
