El Dorado is headquarters of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission as well as Murphy USA, Deltic Timber Corporation and a DelekUS oil refinery. The city has a downtown arts district, the Murphy Arts District (MAD); a community college, South Arkansas Community College (SouthArk); and a multi-cultural arts center (SAAC) The city was the heart of the 1920s oil boom in the area. During World War II, it became a center of the chemical industry, which still plays a part in the economy, as do oil and timber. It is located in the West Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas in the humid subtropical zone (Köppen climate classification: Cfa). The population of the city is 18,884 according to the 2010 census, and 17,756 as of the 2020 U.S. census. El Dorado has a total area of 16.3 square miles (42 km²), of which 16,3 squaremile (42km²) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.26 km²) (0.31%) is water. It was founded by Matthew Rainey in 1843 and is the county seat of Union County, on the southern border of Arkansas, United States. It has a population of 9,969, with 8,686 households, out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 19.1% had a female household with no husband present, and 34.0% had no male household.

History

El Dorado is sometimes referred to as "Arkansas' Original Boomtown" The town was founded in 1843 by Matthew Rainey. El Dorado was incorporated in 1870. The town is located in Union County, which was formed from sections of Hempstead and Clark counties. The first passenger train arrived in the town from Camden in 1891. The Busey No. 1 well was completed in the early 1920s. The Lion Oil-Exchange Building was built in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It is located on the Arkansas River, which runs through the town. It was named after the town's first postmaster, who was also the first black man to be elected to office in the state. It has a population of about 3,000. The city is located near the junction of the Arkansas and Arkansas Turnpike, which connects to Fort Smith, the state capital, and Little Rock, the city's largest city. It also has a post office, which opened in 1841. It's located on Arkansas Highway 6, which leads to the Little Rock and Fort Smith exits. The highway was built to connect the towns of Camden, Arkansas, and Fayetteville, Arkansas in the mid-19th century. In 1883, Albert Williams, a black man, was lynched by a mob in El Dorados. In the same year, the first Presbyterian church was organized. In 1908, Washington High School opens. In 1919, the B'nai B'rith lodge was founded. In 1922, the El Dorada Oil Refinery was commissioned.

Arts and culture

The South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) is a 22,500-square-foot (2,090 m2) facility with three visual art galleries, a ballet studio, a theatre, educational classroom space, and an open art studio. The El Dorado Municipal Auditorium is a multi-purpose auditorium with a large lobby, grand hall seating, and multi-tiered sloping balcony. The Rialto Theater, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, opened in 1929 with seating for 1,400, and presented live stage shows and films. The Mayhaw Festival occurs in May with a crawfish boil, a "Battle of the Bands", a bike show/one day motorcycle rally, a motorcycle parade, and pool tournament. Winter events include the "Festival of Lights" and the "largest Christmas parade in Arkansas". The South Arkansas Arboretum, opened. in 1965, is Arkansas's only state park located within a city. It includes more than 2 mi (3.2 km) of paved trails. The Murphy Arts District (MAD) opened in 2017 in downtown El Dorados. The district includes a music hall, outdoor amphitheater, farmer's market, musical performers, restaurant with performance stage, and a water park. The SouthArk Outdoor Expo occurs in September with activities for anglers, hunters, children, and families. The official event name is "Bugs Bands and Bikes". It coincides with a Crawfish boil.

Parks and recreation

The El Dorado Recreation Complex and Pavilion has a playground, baseball and softball facility and two pavilions. Memorial Stadium is a 6,000-seat football stadium and track which hosts sports event, school teams, the Boomtown Classic, an annual college football match between in-state college football rivals. Lions Club Park and Golf Course, Mattocks Park, Mosby Park, Neel Park, Old City Park, and South Side Park are city parks. The city also has a public library, which is open to the public on a limited basis. The town has a number of community centers, such as a library, a sports center, a pool, and a bowling alley. It also has two high school sports fields, the Wildcat Baseball Field and the Ladycat Softball Field. It is the location of the El Dorados High School Wildcat Football and Softball Teams. It has a high school track and field field, as well as a baseball field and a softball field for the high school team. The community also has several parks, including a golf course, a baseball diamond, a soccer field, a basketball court, a tennis court and a football field. The school district has a total enrollment of more than 5,000 students, with more than 3,000 of them in elementary and high school. It has a budget of $1.2 million.
