Merrillville is a town in Ross Township, Lake County, Indiana, United States. The town is centered on the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Interstate 65. On January 1, 2015, Merrillville became the most populated town in Indiana, as Fishers in Hamilton County was converted from a town to a city. The Morgan-Skinner-Boyd Homestead and John Wood Mill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Merrillville occupies what used to be woodland belonging to the Potawatomi Indians. In 1834, a clearing was created for ceremonial purposes and called McGwinn Village. A year later, a white man, Jeremiah Wiggins, settled in the place; the place was then called Wiggins Point. Later still, it was renamed Merrillville after the brothers Dudley and William Merrill. In 1971, the area officially became Merrillville (which now includes the old Merrillville as well as other settlements nearby) and was incorporated as a town under Indiana law. In 2009, a pedestrian bridge at Hidden Lake Park collapsed, injuring at least 25 people. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $10.58 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
