Henderson is a city in and the county seat of Chester County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 6,309 at the 2010 census, up from 5,670 at the 2000 census. The city was platted in 1857, when the railroad was extended to that point. Henderson was called Dayton during the Civil War, then was known as Henderson Station and, finally, Henderson. It is part of the Chester County School District and is home to Chester County High School and Chester County Middle School. It has a total area of 7.9 square miles (20.4 km²), of which 0.03 sq miles (0.35 km²) is water. In January 2020, the city paper (Chester County Independent) reported that a Splash Pad would soon be installed at the park. It features playground equipment, a walking trail, soccer fields, a permanent space for the local Farmer's Market, picnic tables, a dog park, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Since 1978, Henderson has also been the site of a Chester County Barbecue Festival, a regional event that celebrates the barbecue tradition of the area. The first pitmaster for the festival was Bill Howard, a pitmaster from Jacks Creek, Tennessee who was known throughout Chester County as "The Barbecue King" The local paper is based in Henderson and is called Chester County Independent, the local paper for Chester County is called Henderson Independent, and the city's mayor is a Henderson resident.

History

Henderson was platted in 1857, when the railroad was extended to that point. The city takes its name from Henderson County, Tennessee. Henderson was called Dayton during the Civil War, then was known as Henderson Station and, finally, Henderson. It is now a suburb of New York City, with a population of more than 100,000.

Geography

Henderson is located near the center of Chester County at 35°2635N 88°3840W (35.443025, -88.644345), to the west of the South Fork Forked Deer River. U.S. Route 45 passes through the city, leading northwest 17 miles (27 km) to Jackson. Tennessee State Route 100 passes south of the city center, leading east 32 miles (51km) to Decaturville and west 30 miles (48 kilometers) to Whiteville. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 square miles (20.4 km²), of which 0.03 square miles ("0.07 km²"), or 0.35%, is water. The city is located in Chester County, which is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located at 35.2635 N 88.3840 W, and has a population of 7,939. It has a latitude and longitude of 35.2535 N88.38 40, and an area of 20.4 kilometers (11.4 miles), or 7.4 square miles. The county seat is Jackson, Tennessee, and the county seat of Decatur, Tennessee is Decatur County, also on the Tennessee-Arkansas border. The town of Henderson was founded in the early 1900s. It was named after Henderson, a former town in the county, which was once the site of a cotton gin.

Arts, culture and outdoors

The city park is called Gene Record Park. Howard was also chosen to represent African-American cuisine at the National Museum of American History and Culture in Washington in 1987. He served as pitmaster for the Smithsonian's African American Festival of History and culture in 1988 and 1989. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. The city has hosted the Summer Camp Theatre Experience for the past several years. It is also home to the Henderson Arts Commission, which has sponsored many arts-related events and programs, like the Summercamp Theatre Experience. The Henderson Arts Council has also sponsored the Henderson Summer Camp.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 6,308 people, 1,992 households, and 1,261 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 80.09% White, 17.87% African American, 0.09%; 0.41% Asian; 0.37% from other races; and 1.18% from two or more races. The city's median income was $32,648, and the median income for a family was $40,907. In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.5% under the age of 18, 25.2% from 18 to 24, 22. 5% from 25 to 44, 16.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was2.96. The per capita income for the city is $16,735. About 15.4% of families and 19.0%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.6% of those under age 18 and 20.1% ofThose age 65 or over. The median age was 27.4 years. The school district has more than 3,000 students. The high school has an enrollment of about 1,200 students. It has a high school with an average enrollment of around 1,100. It also has a middle school with about 100 students. A high school is in the middle of the town and has an average population of around 2,200. The college has about 300 students and is located in the town. The university has about 200 students and an average student population of more than 1,300. The community has a history of being involved in sports and is home to the Freed- hardeman University football team. The city has a reputation for being a good place to live and to work. It was the site of the first high school football game in the U.S. in the 1940s and has been home to several high schools since then, including Henderson High School, which was founded in 1855. It's also home to Freed-hardeman University, which opened in the 1970s. The county has a long history of hosting high school and college football games. The area has also been the home to a number of charities, including the American Cancer Society and the National Institute of Health and Human Services, which is based in the city's downtown area.
