Sevierville (s-VEER-vil) is a city in and the county seat of Sevier County, Tennessee, located in eastern Tennessee. Native Americans of the Woodland period were among the first human inhabitants of what is now Sevierville. The Cherokee controlled much of the Tennessee side of the Smokies and had established a series of settlements along the Little Tennessee River. Early Euro-American traders and settlers arrived in the area in the mid-18th century. The city was created in 1794 after a meeting at a house' house' named after John Sevier, who was killed in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. The population was 17,889 at the 2020 U.S. Census and is expected to rise to 18,000 by the end of the decade. It is located at the confluence of the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River and the French Broad River, near the junction of the Tuckaleechee and Southeastern Trail and Indian Gap Trail. It was named after James McMahan, who established a Forks-of-the-River Baptist Church in 1789, which reported a congregation of 22 members in 1790. In 1795, the congregation had 94 members and a tract of land for a 25-acre (2,100 m) tract was given to the county as "Severville-Little-Pigeon-River" The city's name is derived from the word "sevi," which means "little" or "river".

History

Sevierville is the primary city name, but also Pigeon Forge are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Sevierville. Native Americans of the Woodland period were among the first human inhabitants of what is now Sevierville. The Cherokee controlled much of the Tennessee side of the Smokies and had established a series of settlements along the Little Tennessee River. The various Cherokee trails crossing Sevier County brought the first Euro-American traders and settlers to the area. In 1789, Reverend Richard Wood established Forks-of-the-River Baptist Church, which reported a congregation of 94 members in 1795. Seviier County was created in 1794 and named after John Sevier. The first Sevier-Pigeon Courthouse was built on the site of a 16-foot-high (5-meter-wide) platform mound in the early 1800s. In 1881, the mound was excavated and given the name "McMahan Indian Mound" It is located at the confluence of the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River and Boyd's Creek, near the modern-day town of Pige on the Tennessee River, and is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Knoxville. The town of Sevier was established in 1796 and is now the county seat and the seat of the Sevier National Guard. It was named for James McMahan, who donated a 25-acre (100,000 m) tract of land for the town's first courthouse in 1798. The county seat is now called Sevier, Tennessee, and the town has a population of about 2,000.

Geography

Sevierville is located at 35°5239N 83°3412W (35.878, -83.570) The city is located on the confluence of the East and Middle Fork and the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River. Sevierville has long acted as a nexus between Knoxville to the north and the Appalachian towns in the mountains to the south. The city has a total area of 24.24 square miles (62.8 km²), of which 24.14 square miles of land (62.5 km²) is land and 0.11 sq miles of water (0.45 sq km) is water. The U.S. Postal Service associates the name "Sebierville" with ZIP codes for much of Sevier County, including the town of Pittman Center and other geographically extensive areas located outside the city limits. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located approximately ten miles south of Seviville. Several major state and federal highways intersect in the city, including U.S. Route 441, commonly called "The Parkway" and State Route 66, also known as Winfield Dunn Parkway. The town has several neighborhoods, offering different lifestyles and retail opportunities: East, Northview-Kodak, Old Town, Riverview, and South Sevierville. It is located in an area where the Foothills of the Great Smokies give way to the Tennessee Valley, where the Tennessee River meets the French Broad River.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, Sevierville had 14,807 people, 5,979 households, and 3,706 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 88.9% White, 1.5% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1,3% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, 6.1% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race accounted for 10.3% of the population. As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 17,889 people, 6,026 households, & 3,949 families. The city is part of the Knoxville-Sevierville-La Follette Combined Statistical Area, which includes all of Sevier County. The median income for a household in Seviville was $37,784, and the median income. for a family was $39,840. The per capita income for the city is $21,779. About 34.8% of those under age 18 and 8.7%. of those age 65 or older were living below the poverty line, including 18.7. of the families and 23.3. of those over the age of 65. The average household size was 2.35, and. the average family size was2.9. The population consisted of 24.4% of individuals under the age. of 20, 7.2% from 20 to 24, 26.5%. from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 17.9%. who were 65 years of age or older.

Economy

As of 2004, nearly 50 percent of businesses based in Sevierville were linked to tourism. There are more than 2,000 hotel and motel rooms in the city that generate more than $500,000 in hotel-motel tax revenues each year. The city established a Tourism Development Zone (TDZ) of 3 square miles (7.8 km²) to improve the central business district. The TDZ was funded by $150 million in bond sales between 2004 and 2008 (equivalent to $202 million in 2021) East Tennessee Radio Group owns and operates the area's primary local radio stations, WPFT-FM 106.3 and FM 105.5. Also, WWST-FM 102.1, a Top 40 music station serving the Knoxville market, is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) toSevierville. The town is located on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Parkway in Sevier County, Tennessee. It is located in the eastern part of the county, near the junction of the Sevier and Sevier Rivers and the Tennessee Turnpike. It has a population of about 3,000 people (as of 2004) with a population growth rate of about 1.5 percent (from 2000 to 2004). The city's economy is driven by the tourism industry, which has grown by the development of the national park. It also has a strong nightlife, with more than 1,000 bars and nightclubs in the area. The area is home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Gatlinburg International Airport and the Smoky Mountain Inn.

Arts and culture

It is also home to the Tennessee Museum of Aviation and the Tennessee Mountain Paintball Park. The city is home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Burchfiel Grove Memorial Arboretum and the FoxFire Mountain Adventure Park. It also has a large number of shopping and entertainment options, such as Tanger Outlets and the Great Smokies Flea Market. It has also been the site of the Sevier Air Trampoline Park and the Brandywine Country Fair. The Sevierville High School football team won the state championship in 2007 and 2008. It was the first team to reach the state finals in the history of high school football in the state of Tennessee. The school's football team also won the national championship in 2008 and 2009. The football team's win streak began in 2007, when they finished the season with a record of 17 wins and two losses. The team's record in 2008 was 18 wins and 14 losses. It had a record-high of 22 wins in 2007. The district has a population of 1,816. The county has a history of more than 40 years of continuous growth, dating back to the 18th century. The first town to win the state title was Sevieville in 1805. The last to win it in 1808 was the town of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Education

Sevierville is home to the Sevier County public school system. King University, based in Bristol, Tennessee, also operates a satellite campus in Sevierville. Walters State Community College based in Morristown, Tennessee also has a campus in the city. Sevierville also has its own private school system, the New Center Christian School. The city is also home to a number of other private institutions, including Covenant Christian Academy, St. Andrew's School, and New Center Elementary. The Sevier City School District is a part of the Tennessee Department of Education. It was founded in 1872. The district was once known as the Tennessee School for the Deaf and Blind. It is now known as Sevier Community School District. The school district was formed in 1874. It has been the seat of the Sevie County School District since 1876. It became the Seviere County Public School District in 1978. The current superintendent of the school district is  Mark C. Smith, who was elected in 2008. The superintendent's office is located in the town's downtown area. The town has a population of 2,816. The population of Sevier, Tennessee is 2,716. It also has one of the largest percentages of African-American populations in the state, at 2.7%. The city has a high school population of 1,814. It had a high-school enrollment of 1.8,000 in 2010. The high school graduation rate in 2010 was 9.2%.
