Mesquite is a suburban city located east of the city of Dallas, Texas, in the United States. As of 2019 census estimates, the population was 140,937, making it the 22nd-most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2016, Mesquite received a Playful City USA designation for the fourth year in a row. The city has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for over 25 years. Mesquite is positioned at the crossroads of four major highways (Interstates 30, 635, 20, and U.S. Route 80), making locations such as downtown Dallas, Lake Ray Hubbard, Dallas Love Field, and DFW International Airport accessible. According to legislative action, the city is the "Rodeo Capital of Texas". The city of Mesquite was officially incorporated on December 3, 1887, after electing Mayor J.E. Russell. In the city's earliest years, it was known for many outlaws residing in the area. In 1878, he robbed a train in downtown Mesquite, escaping with $30,000. The town remained predominantly agrarian until after World War II, when the suburban boom took root in Mesquite. By the mid-1980s, the events were being broadcast by ESPN. By 1998, the facility was expanded to include a convention hall, a Hampton Inn and Suites. In 2011, the mall was demolished in the summer of 2006, and FedEx opened a logistics center on the property.
History
Mesquite is the primary city name, but also Balch Springs are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Mesquite. The city of Mesquite was founded on March 14, 1878, on land along the Texas & Pacific Railway, which ran from Dallas to Shreveport, Louisiana. The city was officially incorporated on December 3, 1887, after electing Mayor J.E. Russell. Big Town Mall opened as the first air-conditioned shopping mall in the United States in 1959. The mall was used by director Ron Howard to film portions of the movie Cotton Candy in 1978. It can also be seen in drive-by footage in the Talking Heads movie 'True Stories', by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. The LBJ Freeway (I-635) was constructed, connecting Mesquite to its neighbors, Garland to the north and Balch Springs to the south. The Mesquite Arena opened its doors as the new home for the Mesquite ProRodeo in 1986. By the 1990 census, the city had grown to 101,484 people, up from 1,696 residents in 1950. In 2011, Mesquite passed a law allowing beer and wine sales in the city. The measure had been considered several times for many years, but was always blocked by strong protest against the proposed sales. The town remained predominantly agrarian until after World War II, when the suburban boom took root in Mesquite. In June 2015, the Mesquit Arts Center added a Freedom Park exhibit, in memorial of September 11. The park displays a 15-foot (4.6 m) beam that was recovered from the remains of Ground Zero.
Geography
Mesquite is located in eastern Dallas County at 32°4658N 96°3636W (32.782878, 96.609862), with a portion extending east into Kaufman County. The city has a humid subtropical climate characteristic of the Southern Plains of the United States. Located at the lower end of Tornado Alley, Mesquite and the rest of DallasFort Worth are prone to extreme weather. The highest recorded temperature in Mesquite was 112 °F (44 °C) in 1980. May is the average wettest month. Mesquite is part of the DallasFort. WorthArlington metroplex, in which one quarter of all Texans live. It has a total area of 46.2 square miles (119.6 km²), of which 46.0 square miles are land and 0.52 square kilometres (0.2 sq mi), or 0.33%, is covered by water. It is bordered to the west by Dallas, to the north by Garland, to the northeast by Sunnyvale, to. the south by Seagoville and Dallas, and to the southwest by Balch Springs. The average coolest month is January. The lowest recorded temperature was 1 °F. (17 °C), in 1989. On average, the warmest month is July, with an average temperature of 112°F (44°C) The city is located near the Texas-Oklahoma border, and is in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Demographics
At the 2010 United States census, Mesquite had a population of 139,824. In July 2018, the population was estimated at 142,816. According to the 2020 U.S. census, there were 150,108 people, 46,586 households, and 34,641 families residing in the city. Mesquite is a center for Indian Christians from the Indian state of Kerala. Their settlement was influenced by proximity to Dallas-based hospitals, as well as having low income and moving difficulties to northern suburbs. The second-largest religion in Mesquite was Islam (3%) followed by Judaism (0.7%) and Buddhism (9%). According to information gathered by Sperling's BestPlaces, 62.7% claim religious affiliation. The largest Christian body in the City is the Catholic Church, served by the Diocese of Dallas (19.6%), followed by Baptists (13.2%), Methodists (4.8%), Pentecostals (3.1%), Presbyterians (1.0%), Latter-Day Saints (1,0%), Lutherans (0.7%), and 12.4% from another Christian faith including the Oriental and Eastern-rite churches. In 2018, 28.6% were non-Hispanic white, 26% Black or African American, 0.8% American Indian or Alaska Native, 2.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.4%, two or more races, and 40. 4% Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Mesquite's largest employers are United Parcel Service, Sears, AT&T, Spectrum, Ashley Furniture, FedEx, OfficeMax, and GameStop. Mesquite's economy is tied to the city of Dallas with the exception of local businesses. The largest national corporations operating in Mesquite are: Sears,AT&T and FedEx. The city's largest local businesses are: GameStop, Ashley furniture, and Sears. The biggest local employers in the city are: OfficeMax and Sears, according to the 2008 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, and AT&t and FedEx, as of the same report. The economy of Mesquite is largely based on the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, which is home to many of the largest corporations in the country, including Sears, FedEx and AT &T. The town's population is 1.2 million. It has a population of 1.3 million, with the majority of its residents living in the Dallas area. The majority of the city's businesses are based in Dallas or Fort Worth, with a small percentage of the population living elsewhere in the United States, such as Austin, Texas, and Houston, Texas. It also has a small population of residents living outside the city limits, with most of its businesses based in Austin and Dallas. It is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, with more than half of its population living outside of the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. It's the only town in the Panhandle with a population in excess of 100,000.
Arts and culture
The Mesquite Public Library System was presented with a 2016 Achievement of Library Excellence Award by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. Of the 548 public library systems in Texas, the Mesquite public library was one of only 43 libraries to earn this prestigious honor. Both branches of the library offer traditional and non-traditional programs. The library system consists of two branches to serve the community. It is located in the town of Mesquite, Texas, about 50 miles north of Dallas. The Mesquite library system was established in the early 1900s. It was the first public library system in the state of Texas. It opened its first branch in 1903. It has since grown to serve more than 1,000 people. It currently has two branches, one in the downtown area and another in the eastern part of the town. The system was founded in the mid-20th century by the city's first Librarian, George H.W. Smith. It now has a library system that serves the community in the central area of the city. It also has a branch in the western portion of the community, which is known as the western part. It offers both traditional and nontraditional programs, such as children's literature and art classes. The libraries also offer a variety of other programs, including a children's reading program and an adult literacy program. It's the only library system of its kind in Mesquite. In the western United States, there are no public libraries that offer such programs in the east.
Parks and recreation
The city has been designated a Playful City USA four years running and opened its Heritage Trail system in 2015. The hike and bike trail system consists of 4.25 miles of concrete trails and sidewalks, three trailheads, and other improvements. Mesquite Golf Club is a 154-acre (62 ha), 18-hole golf course for both novice and expert golfers. The 36,700-square-foot (3,410 m2) municipal arts facility houses a 494-seat music performance hall, black box theater, rehearsal hall, galleries, and support space. The facility serves as the cultural center for the community and is home to the Mesquite Community Theatre, Mesquite community band and Mesquite Symphony Orchestra. The city has 76 parks and four recreation centers. The Mesquite Arts Center is a 36, 700-square foot (3.410 m 2) municipal Arts facility. The City of Mesquite is located in the eastern part of the city and has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located on the eastern edge of the town of Quail Springs, which is about 30 miles west of Dallas. It has a total of 76 parks, 4 recreation centers, and four sports fields. The town has a history of being known for its outdoor activities, including a popular golf course and a baseball diamond. The community also has a thriving nightlife, with many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and nightlife venues. It also has an active music scene, with a symphony orchestra and community band.
Government
The city council of Mesquite consists of a mayor and six council members, with Daniel Alemán Jr. serving as mayor and Cliff Keheley as city manager. The council members are listed below. The city council is made up of six members: the mayor, city manager, and council members. The mayor and city manager serve a four-year term, with the mayor serving a five-year terms. The current mayor is Daniel AleMán Jr., who was elected in 2010. He was re-elected in 2012 and is serving his third term in office. The six members of the city council are: the city mayor, the city manager and the council members for a total of nine seats on the council, with four of them elected for a four year term, and the other two for a two-year period. The president of the Mesquite City Council is Cliff Ke heley, who has served in the position since 2007. He is currently serving his fourth term on the city's city council, and his term is set to expire in 2015. The City Council has a total population of 2,816. The Mayor and City Manager are: Daniel Alemán Jr. and CliffKeheley, both of whom were elected in 2012. The Council members for the first time in 2013, the mayor and the City Council member for the second place in 2013 were: Julian Avila, Jr. (D-Mesquite) and Julio Avilár, Jr., both of which were elected for their first term in 2008.

Education
Mesquite Independent School District provides primary and secondary (K12) education to most areas of Mesquite. The Texas Legislature defines all of Dallas County as being in the Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College or DCCCD) district. The portion in Kaufman County is within the Trinity Valley Community College district. Eastfield College provides undergraduate degrees and continuing-education credits as part of Dallas College. Columbia College is a private, nonprofit institution that was founded in Columbia, Missouri, in 1851. The private Dallas Christian School is located in the city limits. Mesquite is served by five high schools: Mesquite High School, North Mesquitehigh School, West Mesquite high School, Poteet High School and John Horn High School. It is also served by a small section of Kaufman County called Forney, which has no residents. The city is home to the University of Texas at Mesquite, which offers bachelor's and master's degree programs. It also has a private college, Columbia College, which provides bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. The town is also home to a private high school, Mesquite Preparatory School, and a private middle school, John Horn Middle School, which also serves a small area of Balch Springs, Texas. It has 33 public elementary schools, ten public middle schools, and five public high schools, including two private high schools. The school district also operates a private Christian school, the Mesquite Christian School, in the town limits.
