As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 49,692. Euclid was originally a part of Euclid Township, first mapped in 1796 and named for Euclid of Alexandria, the ancient Greek mathematician. It developed as an industrial center in the early 20th century, and became a city in 1930. The city contains 143.065 miles (230.241 km) of streets. Amtrak operates its Lake Shore Limited service between Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Boston twice daily, but does not stop in Euclid. It is part of the Lake Erie Snowbelt region, prone to snow squalls blowing off Lake Erie, particularly before the lake freezes over in winter. The assessed valuation of the city is $825,325,160. There are 150 companies in the city. The average household size is 2.13, the average family size is 1.91, and the median age is 61.9 years. It has a population of 52.7 people, 52.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, and 2.3%. The city has a total area of 11.48 square miles (29.73 km²), of which 10.63 sq miles (27.53 km²) is land and 0.85sq miles (2.20 km²") is water. The population density is 4,602.1 inhabitants per square mile (1,776.9/km²). It is on the shore of Lake Erie.

History

Euclid is the primary city name, but also Cleveland are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Euclid. Euclid Township was first mapped in 1796 and named for Euclid of Alexandria, the ancient Greek mathematician. The first settlers in what is now the City of Euclid were Joseph Burke, David Dille and William Coleman, and their families. Euclid Village incorporated out of the northeast portion of the township in 1903. It developed as an industrial center in the early 20th century, and became a city in 1930. Following the Civil War the lake plain of Euclids Township was known for numerous excellent vineyards. The city was named after Euclid, a Greek mathematician who lived in the 4th century BC and wrote a treatise on the history of the world's first cities. It is the only city in the United States to have been named after a single person, and the only one in the U.S. to be named after more than one person at the same time. It was named for the Greek mathematician, who was also known for his work on the theory of relativity. He is credited with the discovery of the Earth's rotation, which is thought to have led to the existence of the solar system. He was also responsible for the development of the first cities in the world, such as Paris, Rome and Milan. He died in 1804, and was buried in a cemetery in Euclid Township, near where he had lived since 1796. The town was named in his honor. It has been the site of many major events, including the First World War and the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1864.

Geography

Euclid is located at 41°3544N 81°319W (41.595563, -81.519176).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.48 square miles (29.73 km²) It is on the shore of Lake Erie, with a beachfront area along its north edge. Bordering Euclid are Cleveland on the west, South Euclid and Richmond Heights on the south, Willowick, Wickliffe, and Willoughby Hills on the east, and Lake Erie on the north. It is part of the Lake Erie Snowbelt region, prone to snow squalls blowing off Lake Erie in winter, particularly before the lake freezes over in winter. The city is home to the Cleveland Institute of Art, which was founded in 1876. It was named after Euclid, Ohio, a city in the early 19th century. Euclid is a suburb of Cleveland and is located in the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Cleveland, Mentor, and Parma. It has a population of 2.2 million (2.3 million in 2010). It is located on Lake Erie and is the site of the Cleveland International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the U.S. and the second-busiest in the world. It also has a number of theme parks, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Children's Museum, which opened in 1881. The Euclid Beach Boardwalk is a popular tourist attraction.

It is home to the Cleveland International Airport, a major hub for air and sea travel, and the Cleveland Metropolitan Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States. It has a population of 2.2 million. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War, and was the birthplace of President John F. Kennedy, who was born in 1858. It also was the location of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1864 and 1875. It's also the home of the Cuyahoga River, which runs through the center of the city, and is a major tourist attraction. The Euclid-Cleveland Turnpike, which was built in the early 1900s, runs along the city's eastern edge. It runs through Euclid, and also has a north and south spur.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 48,920 people, 22,685 households, and 12,187 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 43.8% White, 52.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, and 0.7% Asian. In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 6. 8% from 18 to 24, 30. 7% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. Notable attractions/history

Euclid was the site of the 1926 U.S. Supreme Court case Euclid v. Ambler. The case opened the doors for municipalities across the United States to establish zoning ordinances. Euclid High School was one of 5 schools in Ohio to split its school up via the Knowledgeworks Foundation grant. The Euclid Public Library ranked 3rd in the nation in the 50,000 population category in 2007. The 1987 Michael J. Fox movie Light of Day was partially filmed in Euclid. The city is home to the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame tracing Cleveland-style Polka from its Slovenian roots. It is the home to both the main plant and corporate headquarters of the Lincoln Electric Company, Located on St. Clair Avenue. At 443 feet, it is the largest in Ohio and one of the larger in North America. It was the home of the Greater Cleveland Slo-Pitch SoftballHall of Fame. In June 2011, Lincoln Electric installed a 2.5 Megawatt wind turbine. The cordless telephone was invented in the city by George Sweigert in 1969. It has been recognized in the Top Ten of the HAPLER Public library Ratings. In its time, the name was known worldwide, among the earth moving and heavy equipment community. The home town of new wave science fiction author Roger Zelazny. The opening scene of the film Light Of Day was filmed in the Euclid area. The film was partly set in the area.

Transportation

Euclid is situated near the junction of Interstate 90, Interstate 271 and Ohio Route 2. Major east-west thoroughfares include Lake Shore Blvd. (SR 283), Lakeland Freeway (I-90/SR2), St. Clair Avenue, Euclid Avenue (US 20), and Chardon Road (US 6) Northsouth routes include East 185th Street (aka "Old World Plaza"), East 200, East 222, Babbitt Road, East 260th/Richmond Road (SR 175), Highland Road and Lloyd Road. GCRTA bus routes serving Euclid include the #39 (Lakeshore), #10 (E. 105 / Lakeshore) and #28/28A. Several of these routes were originally operated by the now-defunct Euclid Transit System, whose operations merged with the G CRTA during the late 1970s. Euclid is home to the Euclid High School, which was founded in 1883. It is also the home of the Cleveland Institute of Art, which opened in 1887. The Euclid Public Library is located in the city's East Side neighborhood. The library is open to the public on weekdays, and has a free library card. It also has a museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art's "Cleveland in the City of the Stars", which was dedicated to the memory of James Cleveland, who was killed in a car crash in 1964. The city's library is also home to a museum of Cleveland history, which dates back to the 19th century.

Ethnic groups

Euclid is home to a variety of ethnic groups. One of the largest is the historic Slovene population. Today, Euclid's largest ethnic population is African American. The city also contains sizeable populations of Croats, Irish and Italian communities. There are a number of streets in Euclid that commemorate the Slovenian influence on Euclid, including Recher, Mavec, Drenik, Grdina, Trebec, Mozina, Kapel, and Ljubljana. There is also a section of Euclid known as "Slovenia Street" which commemorates the city's Slovenian past. The town's largest population is the African American community, followed by the Croats and the Irish. It is also home to the Italian community, which has a population of around 2,000 people. It also contains a small population of Italians, who live in the town's Italian neighborhood. The Italian community is also known as the "Italian-American community" and has a large population of about 1,500 people in the city. It was founded in the 18th century by Italian immigrants, who came to the U.S. in the 19th century. It has a history of being part of the Italian-American diaspora, with many communities dating back to the early 20th century, including the towns of Drenic and Grdine. The current mayor of the city is Edwin J. O'Neill, who was elected in 2008.

There was previously a Catholic school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, St. Robert Bellarmine School. It closed in 2008, and that year it only had 136 students. Our Lady of the Lake, a Roman Catholic middle school and church, is located on Lakeshore Boulevard. Saints Robert and William Catholic School, also a Roman Catholics middle school, is Located on East 260th Street. Euclid High School is the local public high school. The local public school district is Euclid City Schools. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The school district was formed in the early 1900s. It has been in the same district since the mid-20th century. It was once called the Cleveland Public School District, but it is now called Euclid Public Schools. The district was once known as the Cleveland City School District before it was absorbed by the Cleveland School District in the 1950s. The current district was founded in the late 1960s and is now known as Euclid School District No. 1, or Euclid-Cleveland Public School No. 2, or EPSD No. 3. Epsd. No. 4 is a private school that was closed in the 1970s and reopened in the 1980s. There are no public schools in Euclid, but there are several private schools in the surrounding area. There is one private high school, Euclid Preparatory School, and one private middle school. There was also a private elementary school that closed in 1998.
