Ferndale is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It forms part of the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 19,190. It is well known in the Detroit area for its LGBT population and progressive policies.Native Americans were early inhabitants of the area now known as the City of Ferndale. It was incorporated into a village in 1918, then into a city on March 7, 1927. It became a bedroom community for Detroit workers, with most of its growth in housing from 1920 to 1951. In recent decades, the downtown area has revitalized. In 2010, there were 19,900 people, 9,559 households, and 4,349 families living in the city. The council-manager form of government, and is governed by a city council consisting of a mayor and four council members. The city council appoints a city manager, who manages the day-to-day operations of the city, and the current city manager is Joseph Gacioch. In the 1800s farmers began cultivating the land. After the invention of the automobile and the development of the automotive assembly line, the population of FerNDale increased rapidly. The current mayor is Melanie Piana and the city council members are Raylon Leaks-May, who is also Mayor Pro Tem, Greg Pawlica, Kat Bruner-James and Laura Mikulski. The 2010 census showed the city has a total area of 3.88 square miles (10.05 km²), all land.

History

Ferndale is the primary city name, but also Detroit are acceptable city names or spellings, Royal Oak Twp on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Ferndale. Ferndale was incorporated into a village in 1918. It became a bedroom community for Detroit workers from 1920 to 1951. Ferndale's downtown shopping area, 9 Mile Road, featured many busy, popular stores in the 1940s to 1960s, but later went into decline, and many business closed. In recent decades, the downtown area has revitalized. The city has continued to make itself more accessible to people by reducing traffic lanes on Hilton Road and Pinecrest Road, two major local north/south streets. It has also added bicycle lanes and added on-street parking on West Nine Mile Road to make the downtown more pedestrian-friendly in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was incorporated as a city on March 7, 1927, by vote of the citizens of the village. It is located in the U.S. state of Michigan, and was once part of the state of Wisconsin. It now has a population of more than 2,000,000 and is home to the University of Michigan-Flint and the Michigan Institute of Technology. It also has a chapter of the Motor City Club of Detroit, which was founded in 1894. The City of Fernd Dale was named after the city's first postmaster, William Ferndal, who was born in 1847. The Ferndales are now a suburb of Detroit and the city is in the Michigan Department of Education. The University of Detroit is a member of the Michigan State University System and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Ferndale is governed by a city council consisting of a mayor and four council members. The city council appoints a city manager, who manages the day-to-day operations of the city. The current mayor is Melanie Piana and the current city manager is Joseph Gacioch. The council-manager form of government is the most common form of city government in the state, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Secretaries of State.

Geography

Ferndale is bordered to the south by 8 Mile Road, to the north by Oakridge Street, and (east of Woodward Avenue) by 10 Mile Road and I-696. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.88 square miles (10.05 km²), all land. It is adjacent to the cities of Detroit, Oak Park, Hazel Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, and Royal Oak Township. Ferndale has a population of 2,856. The city is located in the U.S. Census Bureau's Detroit Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Detroit, Oakland, and Macomb counties. It has an estimated population of 3,854. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The Battle of Detroit was the deadliest battle in American history, with more than 1,000 people killed. The battle was fought between the Nazis and the Allies in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The American Civil War, which began in the mid-19th century, ended in the early 20th century. The battles were fought over the ownership of the Detroit River, which runs through the center of the city. The Detroit River is a tributary of the Grand River, and the Detroit and Oakland Rivers, which flows through the city to the east and west. The Grand River is the only river in the city that runs north-south, and it is the main route between Detroit and Detroit.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 19,900 people, 9,559 households, and 4,349 families living in the city. There were 10,477 housing units at an average density of 2,700.3 per square mile (1,042.6/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 84.7% White, 9.6% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0,1% Pacific Islander, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race were 2.8% of the population. The median income for a household in theCity was $45,629. The per capita income for the city is $23,133. In 2006 the city passed an anti-discrimination ordinance protecting LGBT people from discrimination in public accommodations, with 70% in favor and 30% in opposition. The Motor City Pride festival moved to Ferndale from Royal Oak in 2001, but was defeated in 2006. The city has a population of 22,105 people, with 10,243 housing units, and a median income of $51,687. In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.4 per cent under the age of 18, 41.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7 per cent from 45 to 64, and 8.9 per cent who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was2.85.

Crime

Larceny theft was the most common crime in Ferndale, making up 51.7% of the crime rate. Six known homicides have been recorded since 2000. Crime is significantly lower than inner communities such as Detroit, Dearborn and Hamtramck, and its neighbors such as Hazel Park, Oak Park and Warren. However, other outer communities have a lower crime rate, such as Warren and Hazel Park. The crime rate is relatively neutral, with the majority of crimes occurring in the outer areas of the city. The most common type of crime is larceny, followed by burglary, then robbery and then assault. The highest crime rate was burglary, with more than 50% of all crimes being committed in the inner city areas of Detroit and Dearborn. The city has a crime rate of 0.9%. The lowest crime rate in the city is 1.2%. The crime rates are lower than the national average, at 0.8%. The city's crime rate has been stable since 2000, with only one homicide in that time period. It has had six known homicides since 2000; one being in 2001, one in 2005, and one in 2007. It also has one known homicide in 2008, and two in 2009. It is the most crime-ridden city in the Detroit area, with 51% of its crime rate coming from larcenious theft. The average crime rate for the outer city areas is 0.7%. It is also the lowest for the inner cities, at 1.3%.

Education

Ferndale has its own school district, Ferndale Public Schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools. A portion of the city is instead zoned to Hazel Park Schools. Ferndal High School and University High School are both part of Ferndales Public Schools. The city is also home to the University of Minnesota, which is a member of the Minnesota State System of Higher Education. The town also has a number of private schools, including a private high school and a private middle school. It is home to one of the largest libraries in the United States, with more than 2,000 students. It also has the largest public library system in the U.S., with over 1,200 students. The community also has several wineries, many of which are open to the public. It has a population of about 3,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town center. It was once known as the "City of the Stars" because of its proximity to the city of Minneapolis, which was once the largest city in the state.
