Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria, known in England as Queen Mary. Sixteen of Maryland's twenty-three counties border the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and its many tributaries, which combined total more than 4,000 miles of shoreline. Although one of the smallest states in the U.S., it features a variety of climates and topographical features that have earned it the moniker of America in Miniature. In a similar vein, Maryland's geography, culture, and history combines elements of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeastern, and South Atlantic regions of the country. Maryland has an area of 12,406.68 square miles (32,133.2 km²) and is comparable in overall area with Belgium (11,787 square miles (30,530 km²)). It is the 42nd largest and 9th smallest state and is closest in size to the state of Hawaii (10,930.98 square miles (28,311.1 km²)), the next smaller state. The next larger state, its neighbor West Virginia, is almost twice the size of Maryland (24,229.76 square miles (62,754.8 km²)).

If you see the given map of Maryland, you will find it that the state makes boundary with Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia to its south and west accordingly; Delaware lies in the east and Pennsylvania to its north.

The interesting fact about Maryland US is – it is a significant center for life sciences research and development. Surprisingly, the state has more than 350 biotechnology companies. There are many institutions and government agencies in the state for the research and development work in the state; significant of them are Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Human Genome Sciences (HGS), Howard Hughes Medical Institute and many more.

In addition, the Maryland state US has variable climate and coastal location; hence, it has also attractions for the tourists. There are some of the panoramic cities that have many several Maryland tourists’ attractions; important of them are Annapolis (capital city shown on the Maryland Map), Baltimore, Bethesda, Bowie, Chesapeake City, Cumberland, Ocean City, Rockville and many others. These Maryland cities as you can see on the given Maryland state map US have perfect locations and ideal climate four tourisms.

It's not often you can say you spent your beach vacation with wild ponies - but that's exactly what you can do at Assateague Island National Seashore. Watch the ponies from afar or take a ranger-led tour to learn about the adorable residents.

The US State Maryland occupies 25,147 m², about 0,27 % of the total territory of the USA of 9,148,020 m². The total population of the US State Maryland with 6,052,177 inhabitants (in 2017) has already increased by 14,27 % in this millennium. Almost 40 years ago there were 1,835,202 fewer people. The capital Annapolis alone has 39,321 inhabitants.

From November 26, 1783, to August 13, 1784, Annapolis was the location of the nation’s capital. The statehouse where George Washington resigned as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1783 (and where the treaty that ended the Revolutionary War was ratified in 1784) still stands in Annapolis. Baltimore has a population of nearly 622,000 residents.

Maryland possesses a variety of topography within its borders, contributing to its nickname America in Miniature. It ranges from sandy dunes dotted with seagrass in the east, to low marshlands teeming with wildlife and large bald cypress near the Chesapeake Bay, to gently rolling hills of oak forests in the Piedmont Region, and pine groves in the Maryland mountains to the west. Maryland is bounded on its north by Pennsylvania, on its west by West Virginia, on its east by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, and on its south, across the Potomac River, by West Virginia and Virginia. The mid-portion of this border is interrupted by District of Columbia, which sits on land that was originally part of Montgomery and Prince George's counties and including the town of Georgetown, Maryland. As is typical of states on the East Coast, Maryland's plant life is abundant and healthy. A good dose of annual precipitation helps to support many types of plants, including seagrass and various reeds at the smaller end of the spectrum to the gigantic Wye Oak, a huge example of white oak, the state tree, which can grow in excess of 70 feet (21 m) tall. Middle Atlantic coastal forests, typical of the southeastern Atlantic coastal plain, grow around Chesapeake Bay and on the Delmarva Peninsula. Moving west, a mixture of Northeastern coastal forests and Southeastern mixed forests cover the central part of the state. The Appalachian Mountains of western Maryland are home to Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests. These give way to Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests near the West Virginia border.

Maryland is known under different nicknames; aka America in Miniature, or Chesapeake State, or Cockade State, or Free State, or Monumental State, or Old Line State, or Oyster State, or Queen State, or Terrapin State and detailed official information about Maryland can be found on the homepage at

(Have you noticed nobody ever complains about the weather being 'cold and humid?) It's in the summertime that we notice the humidity the most, when it's hot and muggy. Its important to note that this is not the average (or arithmetic mean). The median home price is the middle value when you arrange all the sales prices of homes from lowest to highest. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $12.21 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
