Riverdale is a city in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,134 at the 2010 census, up from 12,478 in 2000. Riverdale has an area of 4.5 square miles (11.6 km²) Riverdale is 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Atlanta and 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Jonesboro, the county seat. The city is governed by a mayor and four council members. The mayor and council appoint a city manager, who has oversight over five departments. Two MARTA bus systems serve the city, including:Route 191 - Justice Center/Mt. Zion High School and Route 442 - Milltown Church/Upper Park/Zion High School. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Riverdale's population will reach 15,129 by the 2020 census. It is located just south of HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The area now known as Riverdale was settled before the Civil War. In 1908, the city was incorporated with the name Riverdale, named in honor of Mr. W.R. Rivers, the original owner of the town site, and was named after the Riverdale River, which runs through the center of the city. It was founded in 1886, when the railroad was extended to that point. It has a population of 12,000, with 4,590 housing units at an average density of 1,076.4 per square mile (415.6/km²).

History

Rivers, the original owner of the town site. The area now known as Riverdale was settled before the Civil War. The city is located on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. It is located near the junction of Interstate 80 and I-70, and the San Francisco and San Sebastian railroads. The town has a population of about 2,000. It was founded as a stop on the railroad in 1886 and was named after Mr. W.S Rivers, who owned the land at the time. It has since become a suburb of San Francois and the city's population has grown to more than 1,200. It also has a small airport, which was built in the early 20th century to serve the growing population of the area. The river runs through the town and was once called the River River. The River River was once known as a popular destination for rodeos and other sporting events. Politics

The city is governed by a mayor and four council members. Each council member represents the entire city and is elected at-large. Council members come from the four wards that divide the city. The mayor and council appoint a city manager, who has oversight over five departments. The city manager also has the power to fire the mayor if he or she is found to be in breach of the city's bylaws or regulations. The council can also fire the city manager if they find him or her in violation of the bylaw or other regulations. Parks

The city currently has three parks, all within a mile of each other: Travon D. Wilson Memorial Park on Church St. behind the Merchant Shopping Center and Church Park on Wilson Rd. next to the First Baptist Church of Riverdale. Banks Park on Main St. and West St next to city hall is the city's only other park. The city has no plans to expand any of the parks in the near future. The parks are open to the public and are free to use.
