Jonesboro is a city in and the county seat of Clayton County, Georgia, United States. During the Civil War, the final skirmish in the Atlanta Campaign was fought here south of Atlanta. Jonesboro hosted the volleyball at the 1996 Summer Olympics. The city has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²), of which 2.7 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square mile (0.26 km²) (1.89%) is water. It is located at 33°3128N 84°2115W (33.524512, -84.354290) The city was founded as Leaksville in 1823. In 1846, the Macon Railroad arrived into the area and the town was renamed in honor of railroad official G.Jones. It was incorporated in 1859. The population was 4,724 as of the 2010 census. In the past 2 years that population has doubled to about 15.86%. In the 2000 census of 2000, there were 3,829 people, 1,466 households, and 1,023 families residing in the city. The racial composition of the city was 72.79% African American, 20.63% White, 0.73% Asian, 0,31% Pacific Islander, 3.45% from other races, and 7.55% Hispanic or Latino of any race. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09. The median income for a household in theCity was $31,951.

Geography

Jonesboro is located at 33°3128N 84°2115W (33.524512, -84.354290).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²) of which 2.7 is land and 0.1 is water. The railroad through Jonesboro is built on the Eastern Continental Divide and there are no bridges for the tracks for many miles in either direction. The city is located on the Ouachita River, which is a tributary of the Little Piney River. Jonesboro has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa"). The city has an average annual rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.4 mm) and an average yearly temperature of 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.7 °C). The town has a population of 2,788. It is located near the junction of the Arkansas Turnpike and the Arkansas River. The Arkansas River runs through the center of the city. The town is also known as the "Phenomenon River" because of its name, which means "the river that flows through the middle of the town". The town's name is derived from the word "phenomenal" or "perennial", which refers to the fact that the river divides the town into two parts, one of which is called the "Great River" and the other is called "the Little River".

History

Jonesboro was founded as Leaksville in 1823. In 1846, the Macon and Western Railroad arrived into the area and the town was renamed in honor of railroad official Samuel G. Jones. Jonesboro was incorporated in 1859. It hosted the beach volleyball at the 1996 Summer Olympics with the artificial beach created at Clayton County International Park. The town is located in Clayton County, Georgia, which is in the northern part of the state. It is home to the Clayton County High School, which was founded in 1847. The school was the site of the first high school football game in the state in 1849. It also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. It was the first town to host the Winter Olympics in the Winter Games in 1988. The city has a population of 3,000. It has a history of hosting the Summer Olympics since the games began in 1996, and hosted the women's beach volleyball final in 1988 and the men's final in 1992. It had the first artificial beach in the U.S. at the time of the 1996 Olympics. It now has an artificial beach with a capacity of 2,000 people. It will host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The mayor of Jonesboro, Georgia has been elected three times, the last time in 2012. The current mayor is John McWhorter, who was elected in 2008 and 2010, and was re-elected in 2012 and 2013. The first mayor to win a city election in Jonesboro in 1846 was John McMcWhorter. The last mayor to be elected in 2010 was John McKee, who had been in office since 1846.

Movies and literature

Many of the scenes from the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit were filmed in Jonesboro. The fictional plantation in Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind was supposed to be located approximately five miles outside of Jonesboro, the closest town. Lynyrd Skynyrd's (pronounced 'lh-'nérd'skin-'Nérd) album cover was photographed near the corner of Mill and Main streets. The stadium was changed from green to light blue and light yellow for the scene. "We Are Marshall" was briefly filmed at Tara Stadium in Jonesborough. The Polk County Pot Plane was filmed in and around Jonesboro in the 1970s and 1980s. The movie 'In Hot Pursuit' was also filmed in the town. The town is home to the U.S. Air Force base, which was used for the filming of the film 'The Shawshank Redemption' and 'The Godfather,' among other films and TV shows. The city is also the home of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where the football team won the NCAA championship in the 1980s and 1990s. It is the site of the state's only public high school, which has a population of 2,000. The school's football stadium was briefly used for a scene in the film "Smokey and The Bandit" The town's only high school has a football team, which won the state title in the 1990s and 1991. The state's high school football team has a team that won the national championship in 2010.

Landmark
