Pembroke Pines

Pembroke Pines is a city in southern Broward County, Florida, United States. The city is located 22 miles (35 km) north of Miami. It is a suburb of and the fourth-most populous city in the Miami metropolitan area. The Grateful Dead played a storied performance at the Sportatorium in the city in May 1977. The population of the city has grown from 65,452 in 1990 to 157,594 in 2011. In 1999, the city was ranked third in a list of "Fastest Growing U.S. Cities" The city's rapid population growth in the mid-to late 1990s was part of the effect of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 2003, Charles W. Flanagan High School had close to 6,000 students, making it the most populated high school in Florida. In 2006, Broward Community College and Florida International University started a charter school system of their own. The school system is the largest charter system in the county, with more than 1,200 students. The first inhabitants of the area were American Indians, who first appeared about 4,000 years ago. Skeletal remains of animal hunters dating back about 10,000 year were found around Broward county, showing that perhaps human beings had lived in the area even earlier. The town started as agricultural land occupied by dairy farms, and grew after World War II as service members were retiring. In 1977, a maximum security prison known as the Broward Correctional Institution was built in the northwestern part of town. In 1980, property from Flamingo Road to U.S. 27 was incorporated into Pembroce Pines, doubling the size of theCity.

History

Pembroke Pines is the primary city name, but also Hollywood, Pembroke Pnes are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Pembroke Pines. Pembroke Pines was officially incorporated on January 16, 1960. The first inhabitants of the area were American Indians, who first appeared about 4,000 years ago. The city's rapid population growth in the mid-to late 1990s was part of the effect of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 2003, Charles W. Flanagan High School had close to 6,000 students, making it the most populated high school in Florida. As of 2006, the city's school system had the largest charter system in Broward County. The population of the city has grown from 65,452 in 1990 to 157,594 in 2011. City residents passed a bond initiative in 2001 to allow the city to begin to begin construction to allow for the expansion of Pembrokes Boulevard and Flamingo Road. As a result of the bond initiative, more developers have affected the city, and more hurricanes have affected its west and westward areas. In 2012, a maximum security prison known as the Broward Correctional Institution was built in the northwestern part of town. In 1977, the Grateful Dead put on a storied performance at the Sportatorium. Many Deadheads consider the version of "Sugaree" played during the first set to be the band'sand particularly guitarist Jerry Garcia'sfinest performance of the song. The town started as agricultural land occupied by dairy farms, and grew after World War II as service members were retiring, including large eastern sections of the Waldrep Dairy Farm. In 1980, property from Flamedo Road to U.S. 27 was incorporated into the city.

Geography

Pembroke Pines has a tropical monsoon climate with hot, wet summers and warm, dry winters. A 2017 study put the city in third place for US cities most vulnerable to coastal flooding, with 116,000 residents living within FEMA's coastal floodplain. The area west of Interstate 75 is commonly known as West Pines, and consists mostly of subdivisions built since Hurricane Andrew. The city has a total area of 34.8 square miles (90.2 km²), of which 33.1 squaremile (85.8 km²) are land and 1.7 square mile (4.4km²) is covered by water. The Everglades, Davie, Cooper City, Hollywood and Miramar are all located in Broward County, and the city is one of the largest cities in the county. It is located on the Florida Turnpike, which runs from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. It has a population of 1.3 million (1.4 million in 2013). The city is located in the Florida Panhandle, which is the state's second-largest county. The state's largest city is Fort Lauderdale, which has 1.6 million people (9.2 million in 2014). The town of Miramar is in the Miami-Dade County area, and is home to the city's airport. The town's population is 1.5 million (9,000 in 2014) and the town has a size of 34 square miles, or 90 km².

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 171,178 people, 57,399 households, and 39,823 families residing in Pembroke Pines. In 2000, the city the population was distributed as 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median income for a household in the city was $52,629, and for a family was $61,480. As of 2000, speakers of English as a first language were at 63.06%, while Spanish accounted for 27.91%, French made up 1.24%, Portuguese was 0.94%, Italian was at 0.92%, Yiddish at 0%.74%, and Tagalog was the mother tongue of 0.52% of the population. Pem Broke Pine had the 45th-highest percentage of Colombian residents in the US, at 3% of its population. It also had the 24th- highest percentage of Jamaicans in the U.S. (tied with Wheatley Heights, New York,) at 5.1% of all residents. The city had the 50th- Highest percentage of Cuban residents in. the US, at 8.66% of city's population, at 8%. It also has the 50est percentage of Cubans in the United States.

Government

Pembroke Pines has a Commission-Manager form of government. The city commission has five members elected to four-year terms. There is a mayor elected city-wide and four commissioners elected from four Single-member districts. The mayor is elected for a four year term. The commissioners are elected for four year terms for a two-year term. There are four commissioners from each of the four single-member Districts. The commissioner is elected to a four- year term by the entire city commission. The commission is elected by the city's residents. It has a commission-manager form ofGovernment. It is based in Pembroket Pines, Florida, but also has other locations in Florida and Georgia. It was founded in 1858. It's located on the banks of the Mississippi River, near the town of Pembrook, Florida. The town has a population of about 2,000. It also has a city commission, which has four members elected from the city for four years, and a mayor for a mayor-wide term of four years. There's also a city council, which is elected from among the four districts, and there's a city manager, who is also elected to the city commission for four-years. The council has four commissioners for a single term, and the city manager for two years, for a total of five years. The City Commission has a mayor, elected for three years, elected from a single district, for which there are four members.

Education

Broward County Public Schools serve Pembroke Pines. Parts of the city are zoned to Everglades High School and Miramar High School. Several charter schools are located in the city. The City of PemBrooke Pines operates its own charter school system. In addition to the public schools, the city has several charter schools. The city also has a number of charter schools for elementary and middle school students, as well as a charter school for high school students. The school system was established in the 1950s. It is part of the Broward-Pines Center regional campus of Broward College. It also has its own campus for Florida International University and Barry University. It has a campus for the Florida Career College and the Florida State University of the South regional campus for Keiser University. The charter schools include: Franklin Academy Charter School, Somerset Academy Charter High School, and Silver Trail Middle School and Pines Charter Middle School. The high school is located at Everglade High School in Hollywood. The middle school is at Glades Middle School in Miramar. The elementary schools are at Sheridan Park Elementary School and Silver Lakes Elementary School in Davie, Manatee Bay Elementary School, Silver Shores Elementary School at Weston, and Sunshine Elementary School on the  City of Miramar and Silver Lakes in West Pine Pines. The Charter Elementary School is at Silver Lakes in Pem Broke. It was founded in the 1970s.

Pembroke Pines is home to North Perry Airport, a general aviation airport owned by the Broward County Aviation Department. For scheduled commercial service, the city is primarily served by Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport. Local bus service is provided by Broward county Transit. The city also partners withBroward County Transit to provide additional bus routes within the city limits. streets are numbered as a continuation of the street grid of neighboring Hollywood. Streets are distinguished from those of Hollywood itself by adding a 'west' to the cardinal direction. Streets north of Pines Boulevard are labeled 'northwest' and those south of Pembrokes Boulevard arelabeled'southwest' The city is located on Florida's Turnpike (SR 91) and U.S. 27 (SR 27) The city has a population of 2,816. It is located in the Florida Panhandle. The state's largest city is Miami-Dade County, which has a total population of 3,715,000. The largest city in the state is Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with 2,716,000 people. The most populous city in Florida is Orlando, with 1,814,000 residents. The biggest city in South Florida is Miami, with 3,813,000 inhabitants. The county's largest county is Broward, with 4,717,000 citizens. The town's population is 2,632,000, which is the third largest in Florida.
